Royston Chess Club won the Cambridgeshire League at the first time of asking in the 2009/10 season. Of the 10 matches Royston won eight and drew two, finishing on 18 points, six more than our closest challengers, Warboys. We started with a narrow and very fortunate win over Cambridge. A good win against St Neots was followed by tense draws against Warboys and Peterborough, and a narrow win against New England (the other team from Peterborough). Going into the second half of the season Royston, Warboys and Peterborough were all tied on 8 points out of 10. In the return fixtures we managed to beat a weakened Cambridge team, but Cambridge did us a favour by taking points off the other contenders, so in the end we ran out comfortable winners.
For Royston Kevin Clark, Norman Hutchinson, Paul Kemp, Peter Rice, Brian Judkins and Chris Schonberger played regularly, and Paul McMahon and Martin Pinner came into the team when required. All the team contributed at crucial times, but the strongest performances came from Peter Rice with 6.5/7 and Norman Hutchinson with 4.5/5.
