Royston Chess Club triumphed in a Herts KO competition for the first time in 12 years by lifting the Russell Trophy (for 1st teams).
Our campaign began in January with a 4.5-1.5 win at 2nd division Letchworth without losing a game. The match was, however, closely fought, with Ashley, Paul & Kevin scoring wins.

The team faced Hertford away in the semi final. After a promising start Keith went exchange down and was offered a draw. Arthur's position looked bad and Simon's was unclear. Martin then secured a draw on board 1. Arthur, some time later, managed to force a draw with a knight and pawn against his opponents rook. This left Simon who went for the win. Both players were heading into time trouble and after some quick moves and piece removal it suddenly became a draw!

The U120 team managed a 2.5 :1.5 win over Watford at home to move into the next round.
A win by Arthur on board 3 put us in an early lead, Martin then agreed a draw after trying to find ways around his oppenent before Keith secured a win on board 2 to give us the match. Unfortunately Rodney lost, but we progress to the next round.
